SWEAT SYDNEY runners have been training at the Wanda sandhills for 20 years. Saturday mornings after see SWEATERS taking on any of a half dozen different sand dunes. They range from 50m hills with very steep gradients to 400m hills with a gradual gradient. Circuits including a range of different uphills and downhills are also included.
Warms ups involve a nice jog around Greenhills on the grass then up the dirt trail towards the big dunes, with stunning seascapes along the way.
Cool downs involve a jog back to Greenhills and usually a dip in the ocean for some body surfing or even just a relaxing float.
The sandhill running is ideal for developing power and strength- especially in the calves, quads and gluts. It is arguably the best way to gain maximum heart rate with the lung searing efforts being sure to challenge even the fittest internationals. The hills are there for runners of all standards and in the end it is simply “you versus the hill”.
