BACKGROUND INFO: Head Coach in charge of programming with SWEAT SYDNEY, Sean Williams (coach to Olympians), says he is “excited for SWEAT Blue Mountains with the face to face sessions run by Springwood athlete/coach Darren Purcell, assisted by his wife and athlete/coach Kristine.”
Darren, has had a long and successful running career, medalling at World Championship level, several times a National and State Champion and has held National and State records. Most recently Darren broke the 45-50 NSW Masters Mile record at a recent State Championship that saw him take out Gold in the 5000m also, beating all aged athletes in that event.
Over the years, Darren has constantly been approached by adults for coaching and parents of young talent for coaching, and whilst having had much input into his own running from many of Australia’s top coaches, it is a responsibility he does not take lightly. So choosing who to be mentored by was an important decision.
Darren states, “I’ve known Sean since I was a kid, and battled it out against him in many races over the years. Then I’ve watched how he was mentored by some of Australia’s greatest athletics and running coaches, to become a top coach himself. To be part of his team under his mentorship is great!”
Darren has also been an athlete under Sean’s programmes for the past five years. Under Sean’s guidance Darren was the oldest athlete selected in the most recent Australian Open Aged 50km World Championship that competed in Doha, Qatar that earned a bronze team medal in 2015. Darren has enjoyed mixing up his race distances under Sean from 800m up to 180km, winning or medalling at all distances.
“Darren’s understanding of different race distances will be a huge advantage to him in guiding athletes to be their best. Teamed up with his wife, who enjoys competing and loves the concept of recreational running for fitness and well being, they will be able to develop runners of mixed abilities and mixed goals.”
Kristine says what she enjoys most about running is the “positive mindset that carries over into all aspects of your life. I see it in my own children and the way they approach everything they do … and I’ve seen it transfer into winning in my work life also.”
Kristine facilitated Sean’s programme of their daughter, Georgie, who won double Gold for 800m and 1500m at this years State Little Athletics in Under 14s. But what she says had a tremendous amount of influence over her children’s success is watching them as parents get out and be active. “As parents we are leaders, and leaders don’t tell followers what to do, they lead by example.” The Purcell’s hope that they have heaps of parents join in at the same time as the programmes are written to cater for elite to recreational runners. Groups within the group will help each other to their next level. “We all want to beat our own best! My kids get so excited when they watch me strive and achieve a goal … and then of course, what do they want to do … set goals and work on achieving them.”
Training sessions are for ALL ages for the beginner runner to runners with elite ability or ambition.
